peared for two days. Now you won’t let anyone else take me home. I don’t get it.”
He slanted her a look with a hint of humor. “You’ll see.”
Talk about feeling disoriented! Tess doubted this was what the neurologists had in mind when they alerted her to possible spells of confusion in the days to come. She lowered her gaze to her lap and pinched the bridge of her nose with her index finger and thumb.
“Um…” he started, after a bit. “I…uh…I’m sorry about the other day. It wasn’t the time or place. I shouldn’t have unloaded on you.”
“Hey! I pushed.” Tess reached out and put a hand on his shoulder, careful not to startle him or distract him from the traffic on the road. “I shouldn’t have pried, but I do appreciate your trust. You have nothing to apologize for. I can’t begin to imagine going through something like that.”
He gave a brief nod. “Thanks. And I’m glad you’re well enough to go home.”
The awkwardness between them was so thick she would have needed a surgeon’s scalpel to cut through it. A quick look out the window, and she sighed in relief.
They were almost home.

Oh, no. No you don’t.
As they walked up the porch ramp, Tess reminded herself she had no experience with men. She had no business with wishes or maybes, not if they had anything to do with Ethan Rogers and the demons from his past.
“Surprise, surprise,” he murmured, throwing open the front door.
She shot him a look. The slight curve of his lips reminded her of his earlier, easy grins, and she found herself responding with a smile, against her better judgment. Then she heard what had to be the “surprise.”
A gaggle of voices mingled with laughter came from the kitchen. Herbs and spices filled the air, and Tess didn’t know what to think. “What’s going on?”
Ethan’s concerned expression returned. “Are you okay? Is your head hurting again? You don’t remember?”
She shrugged. “I’m as well as I’ve been all day. What am I supposed to remember?”
“This must be one of those memory lapses the doctors mentioned.” Ethan cupped her elbow and guided her toward the noise. At the kitchen doorway, Tess stopped.
Uncle Gordon and Miss Tabitha held sway over three strangers. A blond woman in her midthirties and sporting a lime-green apron sat at the far
